Obsolescence and Innovation Days

6 & 7 / 04 / 2021

Context and objectives

The massive introduction of complex technologies makes systems potentially vulnerable to obsolescence. This concerns software, electronic components, materials, mechanical and electrical components.
Obsolescence automatically increases the operational risks of systems in that any repair or upgrade action becomes difficult or even impossible. All the players in the value chain are exposed to numerous functional risks (loss or deterioration of a function) and non-functional risks (deterioration of performance, supply disruption, etc.) due to obsolescence.
Solving the problems posed by obsolescence can present industrial risks (availability, sustainability, reliability and maintainability) accompanied by very high costs.

The GDR-MACS Action « Obsolescence and Rarefaction » (2020-2022), seeks to identify a community of interests, to map and animate the network of academics and industrialists around this theme. The launch of the « Obsolescence Days » is one of the founding acts of this action.
It is within this framework that the animators of the GDR-MACS Action are organizing the first edition of these days in the spring of 2021. Thus, we plan to address the social, industrial, economic, environmental and scientific issues related to obsolescence.

The objectives of these 1st days are:

  • To offer an overview of the actions undertaken at the international level, particularly in the USA, Germany, England and France.
  • To share the results of the first research work carried out in France.
  • To create a network of collaborations and initiate future projects on the subject.

The language of the 1st Obsolescence Day is English.

2019 SEM Annual Conference and Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics

June 3 – 6, 2019 in Reno, Nevada, U.S.A. Special Session on Recycled Constituent Composites

The session on Recycled Constituent Composites includes processing and characterization of composites manufactured from recycled materials. These composites exhibit light weight and high strength, while having a low manufacturing cost. Industry has seen an increasing demand for high performance, low cost materials, as well as energy-saving production techniques.

As engineers, we are challenged to design with confidence for the long-term performance applications. Many composites manufactured from recycled materials, such as scrap rubber, recycled thermoplastic, scrap metallic (aluminum, bronze, etc.) chips, offer the light weight, strength and durability needed for aircraft and automotive applications.

Currently these composites often are made up of thermosets reinforced with ground scrap materials, producing tough, corrosion resistant parts. Machining chips are being used as the metal matrix for composites through sintering, casting, and thixoforming. Recycled glass and carbon fibers are being used as fillers in resin, with recycled rubber, plastic, wood, asphalt, or polymers to improve the mechanical properties for certain applications.

Abstract Deadline: 17 October 2018

Abstract Submission: https://sem.org/annualauthor

Abstracts must be 200 words or less of text only, and can be submitted at sem.org. Be sure to select “Composites” as the paper topic. Authors will be notified of acceptance by end of December 2018, and final papers will be due on February 25, 2019. Please forward this on to anyone who might also be interested in submitting a paper, including students.

  • identification et interprétation de phénomènes locaux (champs de déformation) ;
  • dimensionnement en fatigue vibratoire ;
  • étude des pertes dues au contact dans les assemblages (amortissement) ;
  • analyse de vibrations non-linéaires (mesure de champs de déplacement liés aux harmoniques, mesure de cycles limites) ;
  • mesure et analyse du comportement vibratoire de structure ne permettant pas l’utilisation de capteur de contact (ex. : machines tournantes, structures légères) ;
  • mesure de champs de vitesse dans les matériaux architecturés, périodiques ou hiérarchiques ;
  • identification (sans contact) de propriétés mécaniques anisotropes (rigidité) pour des géométries complexes ;
